The 2016 FROSH 59! The Best Varsity-Playing Freshmen in America

Below please find the FROSH 59, our list of the nation’s most outstanding varsity-playing volleyball freshmen for the 2016 fall season.

Starting in Mid-November of 2016 we sent out word to high school and club coaches across the land (and posted the request on social media) that we were looking for the best high school freshmen in the United States. Unlike our Senior Aces and Top 50 Juniors, which are recruiting lists, this is a high school list, based exclusively on accomplishment at the varsity prep level. It does not necessarily mean you are one of the top collegiate recruits in the Class of 2020; only that you distinguished yourself at the high school varsity level last fall.

Remember that moms and dads, as there will be players not on this list or in the Honorable Mention section that end up as Top 10 national recruits!

To be considered, a freshman needed to be a varsity starter and one of the top talents in her area during the fall season. There are many very fine players you won’t find on this list because they played exclusively on the junior varsity or were bench players for national powers.

One other note: this list takes a LONG TIME to compile. I have been working on it since the start of the school year and practically full time for the last several days. I am indebted to Chris Tobolski and Sheldon Shealer of our staff for their help in crafting many of the narratives you will read below.

The Frosh 59 comprises the top varsity achievements, in our opinion, of freshmen in 2016, with more than 200 additional freshmen contributors finding homes in the Highest Honorable Mention, Special Mention and Honorable Mention categories. Congratulations to all of you!

Highest Honorable Mention

Mackenzie Morgan, 6-0 OH, Bellville (Texas) – Morgan was named the District 25-4A Newcomer of the Year following a season where she had 526 kills, 77 total blocks, 497 digs, 104 aces and 24 assists. Her hitting percentage was .280 with an attacking percentage of .365.

Special Mention

Brennan Howell, 6-1 MB, Episcopal (Bellaire, Texas) — Howell led Episcopal with 97 blocks and was No. 3 on the team with 161 kills. She hit .341 on the season. Howell was a PrepVolleyball Deep Impact Newcomer, a 2016 All-South Zone and four-time all-tournament honoree.
